As darkness falls over the historic Cooneana Heritage Centre, visitors are invited to explore beautifully preserved buildings by lamplight, enjoy live blacksmithing demonstrations and hear captivating stories from Ipswich’s colourful past.

Perfect for history lovers, photographers and anyone with an interest in the paranormal, Cooneana After Dark combines heritage, storytelling and hands-on demonstrations to create a unique after-hours experience unlike any other in the Ipswich region.

Event Overview

Hosted by the Ipswich Historical Society, Cooneana After Dark offers a rare opportunity to experience the Cooneana Heritage Centre after sunset. The evening recreates the atmosphere of the nineteenth century, when homes and workshops were illuminated only by lamps, lanterns and the glow of working forges.

Visitors can wander through the historic Cooneana Homestead, originally built in 1868, and discover what life was like for its early occupants. Along the way, renowned Ipswich historian Jack Sim shares fascinating stories drawn from the city’s rich history, including tales that are mysterious, unusual and sometimes a little unsettling.

Throughout the evening, the Cooneana Blacksmiths demonstrate traditional forging techniques, with glowing fires and flying sparks creating spectacular photo opportunities. Historic displays and volunteer demonstrations throughout the heritage precinct provide even more insight into Ipswich’s past, making this one of the standout events of the Galvanized heritage festival.
